As Temple Terrace's oldest surviving historic structure, built 1910-1914, the Woodmont Clubhouse has served many purposes. One hundred years ago, it was an outbuilding for Mrs. Bertha Palmer’s exclusive 19,000 acre “Riverhills Ranch” game preserve. In 1923, it became Temple Terrace’s first schoolhouse, over time it was further transformed into a warehouse and then a recreational center.
The clubhouse was first saved from demolition in the late 1950s by Ruby McSweeney. Then, in 1980, the GFWC Temple Terrace Woman's, GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Woman's, and The Temple Terrace Garden Club joined forces and formed the Woodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc.. The Association was organized specifically to renovate and maintain the building as a town meeting house; in the process, led by Mrs. Marjorie Schine, they preserved a vital piece of Temple Terrace history.
The Association board is comprised of three volunteers from each of the three clubs. The Board volunteers oversee the clubhouse operating income, expenses, and maintenance.
The building has been renovated to accommodate various events and functions such as weddings, anniversaries, and meetings on a regular basis. |
